Daventry is a town located in Northamptonshire. The town is easily reached from most parts of the country and there are 22,367 people who call the city home (though there are over 77,000 in the Daventry district). London is approximately 77 miles from Daventry, though Northampton is only a short 14 miles from the town. Daventry was first founded in 920 AD by the Saxons. At this time Daventry was nothing more than a small village. It was in 1576 when Daventry was granted borough status, completed by Queen Elizabeth I, that it began to grow.
At the centre of Daventry is a historic market. On Tuesday and Friday of each week a street market is held on Market Square, bringing together a number of vendors offering a wide selection of goods. A Farmer’s Market is also held on the first Saturday of each month. These are great places to do a little bargain hunting and try some of the local produce.
With an extensive history that dates back centuries, Daventry is filled with a collection of interesting historical sites and memorials. For the history buff Daventry is never a disappointment, however the town has also been modernised to keep up with the times.
Daventry was first named Daintree when the town was founded. The remains of an Iron Age fort overlook the area and it is located on Borough Hill. Daventry is home to the only 18th Century church in Northamptonshire, called the Holy Cross Church. The Holy Cross was built between 1752 and 1758 and constructed of ironstone. A three-bayed stained glass window sits above the altar in the church, and its magnificent design reflects its deep roots in Daventry history.
The Moot Hall is another longstanding Daventry building of importance. After being built in 1769, the moot has been used for a number of things, including as a women’s prison, a town museum, the town council building and a tourist information office. In more recent years Moot Hall has been developed into a restaurant and an antiques centre, where you can find a few bargains.
There are two league football teams in Daventry and there are plenty of sporting facilities for those who want to spend their time here being active and the countryside surrounding the town is ideal for walks, mountain biking and horse riding.
