Dunmow is an ancient market town in Essex, England. It is located between Braintree and Stortford on the A120 Road. Its location marks six miles from the London Stansted Airport. Dunow has been ranked as the 4th best place to live in the UK, and out of 114 rural areas with populations over 10,000 people. It was the site of a Roman settlement. Dourdan, France is the sister city of Dunmow.
During the medieval times of the town, Dunmow was a thriving commercial centre. Market charters were granted in 1253 and two fairs were held on an annual basis until the 19th century.
Many a notable person hail from Dunmow. Some of the most recognizable names from the area include Lionel Lukin, an inventor, Anne Line, a Catholic martyr executed during the reign of Elizabeth 1 and Toke Townley, an actor best known for a long stint on the evening soap, Emmerdale Farm.
One of the most popular things to do in Dunmow happens only once every four years. The Flitch Trials, as they are known, is a ritual that relies upon couples convincing a jury of six bachelors and six maidens that they have never wanted to be un-wed for a year and a day. If success is found, they are paraded along High Street and receive a flitch of bacon. The next set of Flitch Trails is scheduled for 2012.
