Edinburgh is the Scottish capital and one of the largest cities in the country. Edinburgh sits along the east coast near the North Sea. It is neighboured by the Pentland Hills and the Firth of Forth to the north.
During the Enlightenment the city was one of the major historical centres. This helped the city earn the nickname the Athens of the North. Edinburgh was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1995 in reference to the characteristics of the Medieval Old Town. More than 4,500 listed buildings lie within the city, with a total of 40 conservation areas. This is the highest number of any UK city.
There are many special festivities and attractions in Edinburgh. Each year the city hosts the Edinburgh Festival. This is actually not a single festival, rather a group of festivals held over a period of four weeks. The festivities begin in early August, with around 500,000 people in attendance of the festivities. One of the most notable of these festivals is the Edinburgh fringe. The Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in the world. Other special events that you can find in Edinburgh include the Edinburgh International Book Festival as well as the Beltane Fire Festival.
Over 1 million people come to Edinburgh on a yearly basis. These numbers make the city the second largest tourist destination within the United Kingdom. Edinburgh became a town in the early 12th Century. During the 12th Century King David I granted land to the Church of the Holy Rood of Edinburgh. With this granting it is believed that Edinburgh became a town between 1028 and 1124.
Many people come to the city to see sights such as the castle and Arthur’s Seat while others come for the wonderful shopping. This is a city in which you can buy anything that you need and there are plenty of shops and markets to be explored. Alternatively, pay a visit for the Hogmanay celebrations at New Year. New Year’s Eve sees much of the city centre closed off and some of the areas are only accessible if you buy a ticket. The party atmosphere is worth it though and it is a great event to be a part of.
