Situated in South Lanarkshire, Scotland, Hamilton is a charming little town that offers attractions in both the countryside and the town. The town was named after the family who built many of its most famous landmarks. From castles, mansions, churches, museums and parks to picturesque shopping arcades, this area has something for everyone, no matter what their interest. This part of the country is very beautiful and should be high on anyone’s list of must-see places to visit.
Take the family over to the Low Parks Museum for the day. The Visit Scotland grading scheme has given this attraction a 5 star rating and it is a great place to find out more about the area and its history. Some of the exhibits are interactive and these are great for young and enquiring minds. The buildings that are home to the museum are part of the former estate of the Duke of Hamilton. Also close by is the Mausoleum which was intended to be the last resting place of some of the Hamilton Family although due to flooding problems the coffins were moved to the local cemetery. While the Mausoleum is impressive from the outside, visitors can also see the interior with a guided tour which needs to be booked in advance.
Other historical attractions in the area include the Hamilton Old Parish Church which was designed by the famous William Adam. This dates back to the early part of the 18th century and is one of the oldest buildings in the town which is still used as originally intended. The church is home to the Netherton Cross, a pre-Norman religious relic.
For a family day out and plenty of fresh air why not try the Chatelherault Country Park? This is close to the town and is a great place to explore, enjoy a picnic and have a good long walk. This is popular with both locals and visitors and in the summer there are plenty of people heading in this direction. Make the most of any good weather by getting out and about here.
This is a great area of the country to visit for those who enjoy sports.
