I'm sure everyone reading this has eaten in bed at some point, whether its ice cream to console you, soup when you're ill or toast and tea for a lazy weekend breakfast. But however nice it is having breakfast in bed, there is nothing worse than finding toast crumbs in your bed when you get into it!

A memory foam mattress is probably easier to clean than you think. There are lots of myths surrounding memory foam products so let's try to debunk some of them right now. It is OK to get  memory foam wet, so you can use water on it when you clean it. It is also OK to use a vacuum on memory foam and this will not, as some believe, pull it out of shape.

So if you need to clean your mattress or memory foam topper then you can do most of the things you'd do on a stuffed mattress. The first thing you should do is vacuum the mattress to remove surface and near surface dust. If you have a strength setting on your vacuum it is best to set it to a moderate setting, and to use a soft brush attachment.

Now for what may be a surprise to you. You can actually wash memory foam! It isn't a great idea to dunk it in a pool of course, but it's OK to spray it with a shower attachment. This will remove any stubborn dust or other materials. Be sure to do it with lukewarm water rather than hot water, as this could damage the fabric of the mattress. Next you can look at removing any stains.

To remove stains from your mattress there are a couple of things you can use. Fabric cleaner works well, but if you don't have any then you can use a mild soap or even washing up liquid. These should be used in a fairly weak solution and sprayed onto the mattress. If you prefer natural cleaning options you cold use a mild vinegar or bicarbonate of soda solution. This cleaning solution can be left for 20 minutes or so before being rinsed off. Make sure you don't wring the mattress or squeeze it too hard to remove excess water as this can damage it. You can fold the mattress and press it but try to avoid doing this unless you really need to. The best way to dry it is to do so in the open air or by using an electric fan. You shouldn't put direct heat on the mattress, so a use of a hairdryer close up is not recommended.

Once your mattress has been cleaned and is completely dry then it is OK to put it back on your bed. It is always a good idea to have a removable, washable cover on your mattress to help prevent stains and dust, and these will prolong the life of your mattress.
